Experiencing the Arizona Frontier The Working Conferences organized by IFIP WG 2.5 are characterized by intense, interactive sessions; therefore, a traditional feature during the event has been a “Wednesday foray” designed to stimulate informal discussion, while providing an opportunity to experience an aspect of the conference venue. The events of Wednesday afternoon and evening will provide a unique opportunity to experience the Arizona frontier of the 1860s through the 1880s. The afternoon will start with a guided tour of the Sharlot Hall Museum, featuring the early days of Prescott as the capital of the Arizona Territory. Prescott was the first territorial capital, 1863-1867, and was again territorial capital from 1877 to 1889. The museum buildings include the residences of the first and fifth Territorial Governor. Next will be an opportunity to visit Whisky Row for an afternoon break at The Palace. Twice destroyed by fire, The Palace tradition started in 1877 with patrons such as Wyatt and Virgil Earp and Doc Holiday. After an informal buffet dinner, the highlight will be presentations about Wyatt Earp, famous for the gunfight in Tombstone (which, incidentally, did not occur at the OK Corral) and his wife by Wyatt Earp, the great grandnephew of Wyatt Earp, and Terry Earp, his wife. The presentations, “Wyatt Earp: Life on the Frontier” (http://wyattearp.biz/plays/wyattearp/index.htm) and “Mrs. Wyatt Earp” (http://wyattearp.biz/plays/mrswyattearp/index.htm), were written by Terry Earp, an award winning playwright. These presentations provide a more accurate account of the events in the Earp’s lives than many of the books about the Earps and are definitely more accurate than the movies and television series. Activities for individuals accompanying conference participants Several activities will be available for individuals accompanying conference participants. One activity, a trip to Sedona, will require registration and pre-payment of an activity fee (if there is an insufficient number of guests and the trip must be cancelled, then the pre-payment will be refunded). Guests will depart from the Hassayampa Inn at approximately 9:00 am on Tuesday, July 18 and return to the Hassayampa Inn at approximately 5:00 pm. The trip will include an hour narrated tour of the scenic red rock area with ample opportunities for photographing the remarkable formations. Opportunities for other activities will be arranged early during the Working Conference. |
