About Prescott, Arizona

We call it “Preskitt”, pronounced as in biscuit!

The Hassayampa Inn, the conference site, is located less than a block from the downtown center, the courthouse square.

History is important in Prescott – over 600 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Prescott is, however, not a typical southwestern town. It is the most Midwestern-looking city in Arizona due to Abraham Lincoln’s effort to populate Prescott, the first territorial capital, with Northerners and Midwesterners and, therefore, ensure it supported the North. Prescott has been honored with numerous awards for success in preserving its heritage. For example, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the country's largest private, nonprofit preservation organization, included Prescott in its 2006 Dozen Distinctive Destinations, an annual list of unique preserved communities in the United States. Two museums present an historical perspective on Prescott and Northern Arizona:

Sharlot Hall Museum; and
Smoki Museum

Shopping is an adventure in Prescott. Although the Prescott Gateway Mall is approximately five miles east of downtown Prescott, there are many galleries, antique stores, and other shops in downtown Prescott.

There is also an abundance of excellent restaurants in downtown Prescott -- the following is A Very Biased Guide to Restaurants within walking distance of the Hassayampa Inn. In addition to the excellent Peacock Dining Room at the Hassayampa Inn, there are numerous nearby restaurants. On Cortez Street (first street west of the Hassayampa Inn), you will find three excellent restaurants for a special dinner during the conference week:

The Rose Restaurant, 234 S Cortez Street, open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday and brunch on Sunday;
129 1/2 An American Jazz Grille, 129 1/2 N Cortez Street; and
Murphy's Restaurant, 201 N Cortez Street – specialty is steaks, especially filet.

Well worth the walk (about five blocks), the El Gato Azul, 316 W Goodwin Street, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; however, it is quite small and, therefore, a reservation is essential for dinner. In addition to Spanish and Mediterranean Tapas, El Gato Azul has several unique entrees, for example, Chipolte Prickly Pear Duck
and Serrano & Gorgonzola Filet Migon (the serrano pepper is said to be about 5 times hotter than the jalapeño). Because it is small, the menu changes almost daily.

129 1/2 and El Gato Azul are operated by Four Corners Restaurants, which also operates:

  • Acme Fish Co., 220 W Gurley Street, (less than three blocks west of the Hassayampa Inn) usually the best seafood and fish selection in Prescott – their crabcakes are comparable to crabcakes in Maryland, and
  • N'awlins on Montezuma, 124 N Montezuma Street (second street west of the Hassayampa Inn and a half block north), featuring blues in addition to Cajun and Creole cuisine.

An excellent choice for a light dinner (or more!) is Genovese's Ristorante Italiano, 217 W Gurley Street (about two and half blocks west on Gurley Street).

Murphy’s Restaurants has a pair of restaurants, which are also good for lunch or a light dinner (and/or Happy Hour):

Restaurants around the courthouse square offer extremes from a light lunch at Le Crepe Company, 108 W Gurley Street, to a real old-fashioned hamburger and malt at Kendall's Famous Burgers & Ice Cream, 113 S Cortez Street, while The Prescott Brewing Company, 130 W Gurley Street, offers a selection of Arizona beers (and beer from other areas, of course).

But if you really want to experience the West, go to Whisky Row (Montezuma Street between Gurley Street and Goodwin Street) and visit the Palace Restaurant and Saloon, 120 S Montezuma Street. Step up to the bar and imagine Wyatt Earp or Doc Holiday beside you! You will find numerous less authentic saloons and bars along Whisky Row.

For a list of additional restaurants in the Prescott area, visit the Chamber of Commerce website.
